If it has wings, feathers and a beak then it must be a bird. Most birds use their wings for flying but some do not. Penguins cannot fly but they still flap their wings under water to swim. In the hot desert the ostrich, another flightless bird, uses its wings to shade its eggs and keep them cool. The kiwi cannot fly either and it has feathers that look like hair. A birds beak and how it looks can give you a hint as to what a bird eats. Parrots have large powerful beaks for cracking hard nuts. Predatory birds like hawks and eagles have sharp hooked beaks that are perfect for tearing off flesh. There are about 8800 species of Birds around the world and they live on every continent including Antarctica.
